Mother of pearl refers to the iridescent, pearly substance that forms the inner layer of the shells of some mollusks. This mother of pearl is black in colour because it came from the shells of Tahitian black-lipped oysters. The unique and beautiful dark colour is created by the presence of iron and magnesium in the water where the oysters live.
